Most American lawns are smaller than people think. Once you subtract the house and driveway, a typical suburban lot holds a few thousand square feet of grass. That's good news: the mowers built for small lawns are the cheapest wire-free models, and the easiest to set up.

1. Segway Navimow i110

i105 (⅛ acre): $799

The i110 covers a quarter acre for $1,099, and the i105 handles an eighth of an acre for $799. RTK satellite positioning does the mapping, and a camera-based system keeps it oriented when the house blocks part of the sky.

How to measure a small lawn

  1. Open your property in Google Maps or your county's parcel viewer and use the measure tool to trace each grass area.
  2. Add the areas together. Ignore beds, paths and the driveway.
  3. Multiply by 1.3 for headroom. That's the coverage rating to shop for.
Example

A 5,200 sq ft back lawn plus a 1,100 sq ft front strip is 6,300 sq ft. With 30% headroom, look for at least 8,200 sq ft, which the i110 (10,890 sq ft) and GOAT O1000 (8,600 sq ft) both cover.

Is a robot mower worth it for a small yard?

Often, yes. The smallest models cost about the same as a few seasons of a mowing service, and they take a recurring chore off your weekend. Our cost calculator shows the math for your numbers.

Can one mower do front and back yards?

Yes, if they connect by grass or a path the mower can cross. Otherwise, carry it between them or set up separate maps.
