The Best Robot Mowers for Yards With Trees

Shade is where satellite-guided mowers lose their way. These navigate with LiDAR and cameras instead.

Trees are the most common reason a wire-free mower disappoints its owner. Satellite-based RTK positioning needs a clear view of the sky, and a canopy of leaves blocks and scatters the signal. The mower loses its position, slows down or stops. The fix is a mower that can see its surroundings with LiDAR or cameras.

Why trees confuse RTK

RTK works by comparing signals from many satellites with a correction source, either a base antenna in your yard or a network service. Under leaves the mower sees fewer satellites, and signals that bounce off branches arrive late. Accuracy can fall from about an inch to several feet. LiDAR measures the distance to trunks, fences and walls instead, and cameras recognize grass, paths and edges. Both work fine in shade.

A quick test

Stand in the shadiest part of your lawn with your phone's map app open. If the blue dot wanders or the accuracy circle grows large, an RTK-only mower will struggle there too.

Setup tips for shaded yards

  • Map the lawn in summer, with leaves on, so the map reflects the hardest conditions.
  • For RTK models, place the antenna in the most open spot and as high as the instructions allow.
  • Draw a no-go zone around exposed roots and the base of large trees.
  • Shady grass grows slower and thinner. Raise the cutting height in shaded zones if your mower supports per-zone heights.
