Choosing a robot mower comes down to five questions about your yard. Answer them in order and the shortlist narrows itself.
1. How much grass do you have?
Measure the grass, not the lot. Trace each lawn area with the measure tool in Google Maps or your county's parcel viewer, add them up and multiply by 1.3. That's the coverage rating to shop for.
| Your lawn | Look at |
|---|---|
| Under 5,000 sq ft | Navimow i105, GOAT O1000 RTK |
| 5,000–10,000 sq ft | Navimow i110, YUKA mini 2 |
| ¼ to ¾ acre | A3 AWD Pro 2500 or 3500, LUBA 3 3000 |
| ¾ to 1½ acres | Navimow X430 or X450, LUBA 3 5000, A3 AWD Pro 5000 |
2. How much of it is under trees?
If most of the lawn has open sky, any RTK mower works. If a third or more sits under canopy or beside tall walls, choose LiDAR-led navigation. See RTK vs LiDAR vs vision.
3. How steep is it?
Measure your steepest spot (our hills guide shows how) and check the boundary rating too. Under 20%, nearly everything works. From 30% to 45%, choose a mower rated for it. Above 45%, you need all-wheel drive.
4. How tall do you keep your grass?
Cool-season lawns such as tall fescue are often kept at 3 in or more, while warm-season grasses like Bermuda are cut much shorter. Check the mower's height range against your grass.
- Up to 4 in: Navimow X4, LUBA 3 H models, A3 AWD Pro (3.9 in)
- Up to about 3.5 in: Navimow i110 (3.6 in), GOAT O1000 RTK (3.2 in)
- Lower maximums: Husqvarna 410VE NERA (2.2 in)
5. Can it get everywhere?
Look for narrow gates and side passages between lawn areas. The GOAT O1000 RTK fits through 2.3 ft gaps. If areas don't connect at all, plan separate maps or carry the mower between them.
Then check the extras
- Theft protection: 4G with GPS tracking and a PIN lock.
- Edge cutting: features like EdgeMaster, TruEdge or EdgeCut reduce trimming.
- Ongoing costs: blades, cellular plans after the free period, and eventually a battery. Our cost guide covers them.
